Teresa Barger

Ms. Barger co-founded Cartica in 2007, an alternative asset manager dedicated to emerging market investments. Previously, she spent 21 years at the International Finance Corporation investing in EM companies throughout the world. At IFC, among other positions, she was Division Manager for Africa, Deputy Director of Credit/Investment Review, and Director of Private Equity and Investment Funds. In that post, she created the first index for EM private equity and cofounded the Emerging Markets Private Equity Association (EMPEA). She also created the innovative Gemloc bond fund index, and market development program for local currency bonds. Before joining IFC, Ms. Barger was with McKinsey & Company. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and serves on the boards of EMPEA, American University in Cairo, Gazelle Finance (an SME fund for Eurasia), and Center for Faith and the Common Good. She also serves on the Advisory Councils for the Pacific Pension and Investment Institute and the Global Corporate Governance Forum.

Marc Chandler

Marc Chandler has more than 20 years of experience analyzing the foreign exchange market. Prior to joining Brown Brothers Harriman in 2005, he was the chief currency strategist for HSBC Bank USA and Mellon Bank.

Mr. Chandler is a prolific writer whose essays have been published in the Financial Times, Barron's, Euromoney, Corporate Finance, and Foreign Affairs. His analysis blog, www.marctomarket is widely read. His first book, Making Sense of the Dollar: Exposing Dangerous Myths about Trade and Foreign Exchange, published in 2009, won a Bronze Award from Independent Publishers. His second book, Political Economy of Tomorrow, was published this past February.

He has taught classes on International Political Economy at New York University since the early 1990s and is a Visiting Executive Lecturer at Darden Graduate School of Business Administration at University of Virginia.

Stephanie Cutter is the former deputy campaign manager for Obama 2012 and former White House deputy senior advisor to President Obama. Called "one of the most prominent voices in the [Democratic] party, and one of its top strategists and crisis managers" by POLITICO, her political and communications experience spans two decades in both the public and private sectors.

GQ named her one of the "50 Most Powerful People in Washington." She is a frequent face on CNN as a political commentator and a former Crossfire co-host. Previously, she served as an adviser to Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner and Senators Harry Reid, John Kerry and Edward Kennedy. From 1994-2001, she also held several positions in the Clinton Administration including White House deputy communications director.

Ms. Cutter is a founding partner of Precision Strategies, a communications, digital and data targeting consulting firm in Washington and New York City. She sits on the boards of Organizing for Action, the University of Chicago Institute of Politics, and the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate.

Steve Drobny has more than 20 years of experience in financial markets, covering trading, portfolio management and research.

Oliver Fratzscher has considerable public and private sector experience in capital markets and advising institutional investors, with a particular focus on emerging markets.

He served as the Chief Economist, Executive Vice President, and Member of Executive Committee at Caisse de Depot et Placement du Quebec, where he developed investment strategies for emerging markets, and contributed on the Sovereign Wealth Funds Advisory Board. Previously, he served as an Executive Officer at the ABN AMRO Bank, Deutsche Bank, the International Monetary Fund and Poland Council of Ministers.

For 10 years, he served as a Manager of World Bank's Global Emerging Markets Local Currency Bond Program. Oliver also serves as a Member of Advisory Board of Vet Venture Capital Inc. and is a member of the BCA Research Advisory Board.

VP Science and Solutions, IBM Research

As Vice President of Science and Solutions of IBM Research, Dario Gil directs a global organization of around 1,500 researchers across 11 laboratories. He has direct responsibility for IBM's science agenda, with a broad portfolio of activities spanning the physical sciences, the mathematical sciences, healthcare, and the life sciences. He also is responsible for IBM's cognitive solutions research agenda. Prior to his current position, Mr. Gil was the Director of Symbiotic Cognitive System and during his tenure he was responsible for the design and creation of three pioneering laboratories and experiential centers: the Cognitive Environments Laboratory, the IBM Research THINK Lab and the IBM Watson Experience Center.

His research has appeared in over 20 international journals and conferences and he is the author of numerous patents. Mr. Gil is a member of the Future Trends Forum, the Industrial Advisory Group of the Institute of Photonic Sciences, and an elected member of the IBM Academy of Technology.

Charles Grant

Director, Center for European Reform

Charles Grant helped to found the Centre for European Reform in 1996 and he left the Economist in early 1998 to become the CER's first director. He is the author of numerous CER publications, including "Russia, China and Global Governance" (2012) and "How to Build a Modern European Union" (2013). Among other subjects, he works on EU foreign and defense policy, Russia, China, the euro, and Britain’s relationship with the EU. Prior to joining the Economist in 1986, he worked at Euromoney. Mr. Grant was a director and trustee of the British Council from 2002 to 2008, and is a member of the international advisory boards of the Moscow School of Civic Education, the Turkish think-tank EDAM and the French think-tank Terra Nova. During his career he has received several distinguished awards for his contributions to policymaking. His biography of Commission President Jacques Delors (Delors: Inside the House that Jacques Built) was published in 1994.

Neil Jacobstein has 25 years of AI system building and technical R&D consulting experience with a long list of industrial and governmental partners. He has worked with NASA, Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, National Science Foundation, NIH, EPA, DOE, the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force, GM, Ford, Boeing, Applied Materials, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and more. He was also CEO of Teknowledge Corporation, where he worked on AI applications systems for industry and government. Since 1992, he has served as Chairman of the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing, a 501c3 nanotechnology R&D organization focused on the development of atomically precise robotics. He was appointed in 2016 to the Founding Editorial Board of the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s (AAAS) Science Robotics journal. He is a distinguished visiting scholar in the Stanford University Media X Program, where his research focuses on augmented decision systems and is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute.

Daniel Kahneman

Senior Scholar, Princeton University and Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs

Daniel Kahneman is a Nobel Prize-winning psychologist who, along with Amos Tversky, revolutionized economic theory in the 1970s and is widely regarded as one of the world's most influential living psychologists.

The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was awarded in 2002 for his groundbreaking work in applying psychological insights to economic theory, particularly in the areas of judgment and decision-making under uncertainty.

He studied psychology and mathematics in Israel, receiving his first degree from Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and spent a portion of his required military service developing some of his first ideas regarding humans and their decision-making.

In addition to the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences, Kahneman has won the Grawemeyer Award for Psychology (both jointly with Tversky), the American Psychological Association's Award for Outstanding Lifetime Achievement, and has made the Bloomberg 50 Most Influential People in Global Finance in 2011. He is a fellow at Hebrew University and a Gallup Senior Scientist.

Corey Lewandowski

Co-Founder, Avenue Strategies and Former Campaign Manager for Donald Trump

Corey Lewandowski joined Donald J. Trump, Inc. for President in January of 2015 and served as Campaign Manager through June of 2016. After he left the Trump campaign, he was named a CNN political commentator, a role he filled through the end of 2016.

He is co-founder of Avenue Strategies, a consulting firm specializing in politics and government affairs. His political experience includes working for Republican Congressman Bob Ney and serving as campaign manager for the 2002 re-election campaign of Senator Robert Smith of New Hampshire. In addition, he worked for four years as a New Hampshire state police officer, leaving that post in 2010.

James Lindsay

Senior VP, Director of Studies and Maurice R. Greenberg Chair at the Council on Foreign Relations

James Lindsay oversees the work of the more than six dozen fellows in CFR's David Rockefeller Studies Program. He is a leading authority on the American foreign-policymaking process and the domestic politics of American foreign policy.

He has been a member of the faculty at the University of Iowa and at the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas. He has also served as deputy director and senior fellow in the foreign policy studies program at the Brookings Institution, and was director for global issues and multilateral affairs on the staff of the National Security Council during the Clinton administration.

He has written widely on various aspects of American foreign policy, American government, and international relations. His book with Ivo H. Gideon Rachman

Chief Foreign Affairs Commentator, Financial Times

In his FT role, Gideon Rachman translates his extensive travels and access to world leaders into an insider's view of global events. He writes a weekly column on international politics as well as feature articles and has reported for the FT from all over the world.

Before joining the FT in 2006, he worked for The Economist for 15 years in a range of jobs, including as a foreign correspondent in Brussels, Bangkok and Washington and as business editor. Mr. Rachman's new book, Easternisation: War and Peace in the Asian Century concentrates on how the growing wealth of Asia nations is transforming the international balance of power. His previous book Zero-Sum World, about the future of international relations was published in the UK in late 2010. He received the 2016 Orwell Prize for journalism, Britian's most prestigious prize for political writing and the 2016 European Press Prize: Commentator Award.

He was named as foreign-affairs commentator of the year in the UK Comment Awards for 2010. He has also written for numerous other publications, including Foreign Policy, National Interest, The Washington Quarterly and Prospect magazines. He is a regular broadcaster for, amongst others, the BBC, CNN and NPR.

Vincent Reinhart

Vincent Reinhart has enjoyed an extremely distinguished career as an economist in the private sector and in the Federal Reserve.

Prior to joining Standish Mellon, he was Chief U.S. Economist and managing director at Morgan Stanley and a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. Before that, Mr. Reinhart worked at the Federal Reserve for 24 years, most recently as Director of the Division of Monetary Affairs, and Secretary and Economist of the Federal Open Market Committee, two of the most senior staff positions in the organization.

His responsibilities included directing research and analysis of monetary policy strategies, providing policy advice, and drafting FOMC communications. He has written numerous academic papers on a variety of topics, including the conduct of unconventional monetary policy, debt and growth, and the management of international capital flows.

Mr. Rühl joined ADIA in 2014 and is responsible for creating and leading a global research function to provide economic, geopolitical and energy market analysis to the fund.

He has a distinguished track record as an economist in academia, policy making and business. From 2005 to 2014 he was Group Chief Economist and Vice President of BP plc. He served at the World Bank (1998-2005) as the Bank's Chief Economist in Russia and in Brazil. From 1996-98 he held the position of Principle Economist at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London.

He began his career as an academic economist, first in Germany, and from 1991 as Professor of Economics at the University of California in Los Angeles.

Former Chief Investment Officer, Janus Fixed Income

Gibson Smith has extensive experience in managing fixed-income portfolios. As CIO of Fixed Income at Janus, he served as portfolio manager on most of the firm’s fixed income strategies and funds, including the balanced, total return, core plus, short duration, high yield, real return, global and liability-driven strategies. Mr. Gibson was credited with building the firm’s fundamental fixed-income assets to more than $37 billion and the business received multiple awards for strong performance and exceptional risk-adjusted returns. He joined Janus in 2001 after spending the first 10 years of his career at Morgan Stanley. Mr. Smith also is actively engaged with the University of Colorado: he chairs the Burridge Center for Finance at the Leeds Business School, sits on the University of Colorado Foundation Trustee Board and the Investment Advisory Committee for the University of Colorado Treasury.

Jürgen Stark

Mr. Stark was a member of the Executive Board and the Governing Council of the European Central Bank (ECB) from 2006-2011, and served as the bank's Chief Economist. Before joining the ECB, he was Vice-President of the Deutsche Bundesbank, where he held responsibility for European and International Affairs.

Prior to that, he served as State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Finance, as Personal Representative of the Federal Chancellor in the preparation of G7/G8 Economic Summits, and held other government position related to national and international monetary and financial issues.

His publications include many articles and papers in professional journals on public finances, European monetary integration, institution building and the global financial system.

Maria Vassalou joined Perella Weinberg Partners from MIO Partners, a subsidiary of McKinsey & Company, where she was head of asset allocation, and managed a similar global macro investment strategy. Previously, she was a global macro portfolio manager at SAC Capital Advisors, and a LP. She responsible for global quantitative research at Soros Fund management. Prior to her career in asset management, Ms. Vassalou was an Associate Professor of Finance at Columbia Business School. She also was a past President of the European Finance Association, a Research Affiliate of the Centre for Economic Policy Research in London, and a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Vienna-based Guttmann Center of Competence in Portfolio Management.

Chen Zhao is well known to BCA Research having worked there for 23 years, much of the time as Chief Global Strategist. During his time at BCA, Mr. Zhao developed the company's China and Emerging Market services. In 2005, he became the Managing Editor of the firm's flagship Global Investment Strategy service and developed a very large following for his thought-provoking and insightful research.

After leaving BCA in 2015, he joined Brandywine Global Investment Management as Co-Director of Macro Research. He left Brandywine in late 2016. Born and brought up in China, he worked at various Chinese organizations in the 1980s, including State Economic Restructuring Commission (today known as National Development and Restructuring Commission).

Please note that payment is due immediately with your registration request. We accept credit card payment or wire transfer (instructions located on the invoice). Registration will be confirmed via email once full payment of the conference registration fee is received.

Cancellation requests received more than 90 days prior to the conference start date will be refunded in full, less a $150 USD administration fee. Any cancellation requests received between 30 to 89 days prior to the conference will receive a full credit (of the amount paid for the conference) to be applied to a future BCA conference event. No refunds or credits will be granted for cancellation requests received less than 30 days before the conference commencement date or who do not attend. However, you may send a substitute attendee (from the same firm) to the conference. Any substitution requests must be made in writing (email) for our approval, no later than 7 days prior to the conference start date.

Attendees are solely responsible for their travel and accommodation arrangements and costs. In the unlikely event that the BCA Investment Conference is cancelled, BCA will refund the conference registration fee (amount paid by the attendee) in full, however, it will not be responsible for any other costs incurred by the attendee. BCA therefore recommends that attendees purchase fully refundable airline tickets and accommodation.

Cancelling your conference registration does not automatically cancel your travel and accommodation arrangements. Individuals are responsible for cancelling their own travel and accommodation reservations.
